Greetings, WO Family!

We are officially in the final stretch of April, and the energy in our ecosystem is finally shifting from over-planning to actually doing. It’s that sweet spot in the quarter where we stop talking about the mountain and start checking the traction on our boots.

Last week gave us a masterclass in global infrastructure through the partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. For those who weren't tracking the shipping lanes between your morning coffee and Slack standups, this 21-mile-wide artery is the jugular vein of global energy, handling about 20.5 million barrels of oil every single day. When it hit a standstill recently, the world didn't just notice; it hyperventilated. We saw Brent crude prices do a nervous dance toward $95 a barrel, which is essentially a global "uncertainty tax" on everything from your logistics costs to the price of that weekend flight.

The reality now is that while the blockade has lifted, the ghost of the bottleneck remains. With a backlog of over 60 supertankers hovering like a massive, expensive parking lot, experts say it will take up to 21 days for supply chains to feel "normal" again. The lesson for us founders and builder is stark: recovery time is almost always double the downtime. If a key part of your business stalls, the fix is only half the battle. You still have to clear the mess that built up while the gate was closed.

Speaking of gates and power, the AI world is currently watching a clash of the titans that will define our Q2 infrastructure. For a long time, Nvidia has been the only landlord in town, charging a premium tax for the GPUs that run the world. But Google has officially stopped playing nice. They are now positioning their TPU v6 (Trillium) chips as a direct, more efficient rival to Nvidia’s Blackwell units.

This silicon war is driving a massive wave of AI-led restructuring. Companies like Oracle and Block aren't just letting people go; they are flattening their organizations to free up cash to buy these very chips. They are cutting the "coordinators"—the middle-management roles that used to just move info around. For us builders, the message is clear: Don't just be a coordinator; be an Architect. In a world where AI handles the execution, your value lies in Judgment and Integration. If you aren't using these tools to produce 10x more than you did last year, you aren't just behind; you're becoming part of the "restructuring" math.

On a much more lighter note, we have to talk about the cosmic order of the universe finally being restored. For 266 glorious days, the Arsenal fans in our community were walking around like they had discovered the secret to eternal life. There was talk of "The New Era" and "Renewed Hope” and honestly, for a second there, I almost believed them. But as the elders say, the eagle may fly high, but it still has to land to eat.

After nearly nine months at the top, the Gunners have officially returned to their rightful and familiar position. Watching the league table shift this week felt like watching a long-lost relative finally come home after a very confusing trip—it’s familiar, it’s comforting, and for the rest of us, it is absolutely hilarious. To the Arsenal fans: 266 days is a fantastic run! Most startups don't even survive that long before a pivot. Just remember that while the view from the top was lovely, the ground is much safer, and the air is a lot less thin down here with the rest of us.

With that bit of perspective and a few bruised egos in the chat, let’s get into the meat of this issue. We have a lot of ground to cover as we wrap up April.

Let’s get into the WO updates.

Community Spotlight: Fola Ijaiya on Techpoint Unscripted

If you’ve been feeling like the African tech headlines haven't been matching the reality on the ground, this latest episode of Techpoint Unscripted is the reality check you’ve been waiting for. One of our own, Fola Ijaiya, sat down for a raw, long-form conversation that moves way beyond the usual buzzwords.

Fola and the panel dive into what a market reset actually looks like for startups in 2026, and they don't pull any punches.

A few segments you shouldn't miss:

  • The Growth Trap: Fola breaks down why startups cannot outgrow their local GDP. If you’ve ever confused "expansion" with "growth," this will change how you view your roadmap.

  • The Cleanup: A deep dive into "Portfolio Reconstruction"—the messy work of marking down valuations and moving capital to where it actually generates value.

  • The Exit Reality: A candid debate on whether recent acquisitions are actual wins or just a way to survive the "boom year" hangover.

It’s inspiring to see a community member representing us with this much analytical depth. Whether you’re building or investing, this session gives you the context you need for the next chapter of African innovation.
